Jul 05, 2017

A North east dodgeball team has been shortlisted for a UK National Lottery award in recognition of its work supporting the local community.

The Granite City Guerrillas Dodgeball team are one of six finalist organisations competing for the National Lottery sport award.  It is the only sports organisation from the North East represented from over 1300 original nominations.

The team has long played an active role in the community, offering free dodgeball to those affected by the oil downturn and through a programme targeted towards increasing women's participation in the sport.

The team, which is accredited with Sport Aberdeen and plays at the Jesmond Centre, is now seeking local support for the public vote being held until midnight on 27th July 2017.

Club Secretary Pete Watt said:

“It’s been incredible to be recognised as a finalist for the UK National Lottery sport award. The Granite City Guerrillas Dodgeball team is open to everyone – any skill level, gender or background.

“We’ve had some great successes in the community in the past year and this award would really allow us to take things to the next level. We hope that local clubs, organisations and the community across the North East can rally behind us at this important voting stage!”

Sport Aberdeen Business Development Director Jill Franks said:

“We’re delighted to see a local sports club recognised at this national level for the important role they have played in the community. I wish the Granite City Guerrillas Dodgeball team every success for this award.”
