Andy Murray's Former Coach Leads 'Give It Your Max' Session at Torry

Great Britain Davis Cup Team Captain, Leon Smith, held a ‘Give It Your Max’ coaching session at Torry Youth and Leisure Centre.

The session was held for children from Walker Road Primary School who were given a free tennis lesson from Leon and other coaches.

Give It Your Max is a UK charity that pays for tennis coaches to introduce and teach tennis to children aged between five and ten years old in the state sector. This results in many youngsters trying the sport for the first time, an opportunity they otherwise might never get.

The children had great fun at the session and will hopefully have more chances to play in the future, “We hope to open a Tennis Club with Walker Road so we’re all quite excited about it”, said Class Teacher Stacey Stewart. “Some of them have never played tennis before so we reckon it will have a higher attendance after this. They’ve been hyper all week and Leon really gets them all involved”.

The children took part in a number of basic exercises to get a feel for the sport and took the chance to ask Leon questions about his career, which included coaching Andy Murray from a young age.

“I’ve absolutely loved it, it’s a wonderful group of children who listen well and they’re having a good time” said Leon. “This is my first GIYM session but there will definitely be more in the future. It’s such an important charity as it provides that taster to the sport. It provides the funds for equipment and good coaches like we’ve had today and if a kids first exposure to tennis is this fun lead by coaches like this, they’re going to come back.”

Leon now goes into the pre season for the tennis calendar in preparation for next years Australian Open and the Davis Cup tie in Glasgow.
