The Active Aberdeen Partnership values personal and professional development, recognising that the establishment of new skills and knowledge is at the heart of improving the quality and sustainability of sport and physical activity opportunities.

This fund aims to support coaches and volunteers to obtain a higher level of coaching award in their chosen sport. We are looking for coaches, volunteers and officials who are committed, motivated and determined to succeed.

Please note, you must apply for grant funding prior to the start of your training course.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you are a Sports Coach, Official or Volunteer who is: -

  • Resident in Aberdeen or a member of a recognised city based club or organisation
  • Endorsed by your Sport’s Governing Body
  • A member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or have submitted a PVG Police check, where applicable
  • Insured appropriately to carry out your activity as a coach, official or volunteer

What can I apply for?

You can apply for courses or development activity that will increase your knowledge and skills as a coach, official, leader or volunteer that will contribute to The Strategy for an Active Aberdeen by increasing the capacity of the workforce involved with community sport. This could include: -

  • UKCC Level 1 - 4 coaching courses in conjunction with the subsidy available from sportscotland
  • National Governing Body Introductory, Coaching and Officiating Courses
  • National Workshops, Conferences and Seminars
  • Tutor Training Courses
  • Mentoring and Personal Development
  • Good Governance training opportunities


What we will not fund?

  • Memberships and affiliation fees
  • Individuals who hold a salaried coaching position
  • Individuals who coach for profit
  • Individuals who will not use their training primarily to benefit community sport
  • Courses or training qualifications that are not recognised by a National Governing Body

This is not an exhaustive list and may include other items

How much can I apply for?

  • Up to 50% of eligible costs of non UKCC courses, qualifications, workshops or personal development opportunities  
  • Up to 50% of non-subsidised cost of UKCC courses

What supporting document do I need to provide?

You need to include the following information with your application

  • Evidence of confirmation of a place on your course
  • National Governing Body Statement of support
  • Current Insurance Policy
  • Evidence of current qualifications
  • Confirmation evidence of other funding awarded

How do I apply?

  • Read the grant guidelines and other information including the blank application form to help prepare your answers in advance
  • Gather all the supporting documents/evidence detailed above
  • You will be able to save and return to your application at a later date in order to complete
  • Answer all questions as best you can, giving as much detail as possible particularly regarding your costs

How will my application be assessed?

  • We will begin to assess your application once we have checked your eligibility and have received all your supporting documents
  • Your application will be reviewed to ensure it meets the Sports Coach, Officials & Volunteers Grant funding criteria and contributes to the Strategy for an Active Aberdeen
  • The Sports Grants Theme Implementation Group will then make a recommendation to the Active Aberdeen Partnership on the level of grant award


  • You will be offered a grant (usually by email), confirming the purpose of the grant
  • You will receive a copy of the Terms and Conditions of your grant
  • Before we can pay your grant we will need you to formally accept the grant and provide us with your Bank details 
  • You will be required to provide evidence of your attendance or qualification certificate on completion of your training
  • You will be required to report on how your new knowledge and skills have impacted on sports participation in your community


  • You will be informed of the outcome and provided with feedback on your application
  • Unless your application is not eligible for funding we will encourage you to reapply if you can make a stronger case for a grant
