The Active Aberdeen Partnership endorse a healthy lifestyle approach for the residents of the city and encourage everyone to be as active as they can regardless of age and ability.

The city’s sports clubs and organisations play a vital role in encouraging people to be active in sport throughout their lifetime. We are always keen to hear about new, exciting and effective ways to get more people involved with sport and physical activity.

Have a read through the terms and conditions below before considering making an application.    

Who can apply?

If you have received a Community Sport Grant from the Active Aberdeen Partnership between April-March last year, you will not be eligible to apply for another Community Sport Grant for the same project during this current year

You can apply if your organisation is: -

  • Operating in Aberdeen City
  • A community sports clubs or sports association
  • A voluntary or community organisation, including a charity, working in partnership with community sport
  • A school, further or higher education establishment working in partnership with community sport
  • A non-commercial organisation
  • A constituted body with an open membership or have a governing document
  • Affiliated to your Sport’s Governing Body
  • Following appropriate Safeguarding Policies & Procedures
  • Qualified and insured appropriately to carry out your activity


Please note: - Organisations who already receive funding from Aberdeen City Council will be eligible if their grant application is made in conjunction with at least one other partner organisation involved with community sport 

What can you apply for?

You can apply for projects or activity that will contribute to The Strategy for an Active Aberdeen which could include: -

  • New projects or activity that will result in increasing opportunities and participation in sport and physical activity
  • Developing existing pathways that will encourage lifelong participation and enable those who wish to achieve and reach their potential
  • Activity that will enable community sports clubs to provide a positive environment for their members, particularly juniors
  • Improvement of existing facilities or equipment that will result in additional opportunities
  • Projects or activity that encourage collaboration between organisations to provide co-ordinated and sustainable opportunities
  • Providing opportunities that meet the needs of the wider community
  • Local events that will raise the profile of community sport
  • Projects or activity that will be completed within 12 months of starting

(Please note that if your project requires coach/official education or volunteer training, your club/organisation members should apply for a separate Sports Coach, Officials & Volunteers Grant

What we will not fund?

  • Existing projects or activity that have already started at the time of application or that will commence less than three months after an application is received
  • Projects or activity that are considered to be part of an organisations normal day to day running costs such as rent and utility costs
  • Ongoing staff costs or salaries except coaching costs or fixed term positions needed to meet a specific project requirement
  • Maintenance and repair of facilities
  • Purchase of consumable items of equipment  
  • Purchase of assets including buildings and vehicles
  • Catering and hospitality
  • Memberships and affiliation fees
  • Event entry fees
  • Profit making organisations or individuals who coach or teach for profit
  • Individuals who will not use their training primarily to benefit community sport
  • Coach/official education or volunteer training

(This is not an exhaustive list and may include other items)

How much can you apply for?

  • As of November 2019, you can apply for up to £2,500
  • Quality Mark Accreditation is not essential, but clubs without accreditation may not be entitled to the maximum level of funding

What supporting document will we need to provide?

You need to include the following information with your application

  • Constitution or Governing Document
  • Recent Bank Statement
  • Child Protection Policy
  • Insurance Policy
  • Accreditation Certificate
  • National Governing Body letter of support
  • Evidence of confirmation of other funding awards

How do we apply?

  • Aim to apply for funding at least four months in advance before your project is due to start
  • Complete the pre-application checklist to make sure you are eligible for a grant before starting your application form
  • Read the grant guidelines and other information including the blank application form to help prepare your answers in advance
  • Gather all the supporting documents/evidence detailed above
  • You will be able to save and return to your application at a later date in order to complete
  • Answer all questions as best you can, giving as much detail as possible particularly regards your costs

How will our application be assessed?

  • We will begin to assess your application once we have checked your eligibility and have received all your supporting documents
  • Your application will be reviewed to ensure it meets the Community Sport Grant funding criteria and contributes to the Strategy for an Active Aberdeen
  • The Sports Grants Theme Implementation Group will then make a recommendation to the Active Aberdeen Partnership on the level of grant award


  • You will be offered a grant (usually by email), confirming the purpose of the grant
  • You will receive a copy of the Terms and Conditions of your grant
  • Before we can pay your grant we will need you to formally accept the grant and provide us with your organisations Bank details  
  • You will be required to report on the progress of how your grant is being spent and what is being achieved as a result


  • You will be informed of the outcome and provided with feedback on your application
  • Unless your application is not eligible for funding we will encourage you to reapply if you can make a stronger case for a grant
