An active mind is a healthy mind: reading

24.3.20

Our current situation may be making a lot of you feel anxious and worried, but we are all in this together and looking after our mental health has never been so important. While our venues are currently closed, there are steps which we can all take to ensure that our mental health doesn’t suffer during this difficult time.

Taking part in sport and leading an active lifestyle not only keeps us physically fit but it is hugely important in maintaining a healthy mind. While we are encouraging everyone to take part in exercise at home as much as possible, it is also important to keep our mind busy as we follow Government rules to stay at home.

Reading

We’re not suggesting that you delve into a Dickens marathon or dust-off War and Peace; but whether you’re an avid book worm or prefer to sit with a magazine, reading is a great workout for the brain! Perhaps this is the perfect time to rediscover your love of reading or even pick up a book for the first time in years. Fact, fiction or celebrity gossip, there is something for everyone. What’s your book recommendation? Visit this blog thread on our Facebook page, and share it in the comments section!

We will kick off the conversation with a recommendation from Sarah Webster, Sport Aberdeen Communications Lead. Sarah says:

“I would thoroughly recommend ‘The Hand That First Held Mine’ by Maggie O’Farrell. Even if you aren’t a big reader, this novel will have you struggling to put it down. This is a fictional work of art!”

Thomas Emslie, Sport Aberdeen Digital & Communications Assistant, who is a big fan of science fiction says:

“Admittedly I don’t read as much as I would like to but when I do, I love science fiction novels. My favourite is ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley. Written in 1932; this classic tells the story of a dystopian future where citizens are socially engineered to take part in an intelligence-based hierarchy.”
