MacKenzie Championship Golf Course

Named after its celebrated designer Dr Alister MacKenzie, the creator of Augusta National and Cypress Point, the MacKenzie Championship Course is a true highlight of Golf Aberdeen.

The course is widely regarded as one of the finest municipal layouts in the country, combining a championship challenge with public access and strong community value.

At Hazlehead, MacKenzie created a course that rewards thoughtful play, accuracy, and strategy. Golfers can expect a varied round through mature parkland, with natural features, well-positioned hazards, and holes that ask different questions throughout the round.

The MacKenzie Championship Course has also received national recognition, winning Best Municipal or Community-Owned Golf Course at the Scottish Golf Tourism Awards.

Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie

Dr Alister MacKenzie is one of golf’s most influential course architects, known around the world for designing courses that work with the natural landscape and challenge golfers through strategy rather than brute force.

His most famous work includes Augusta National, home of The Masters, and Cypress Point in California. The MacKenzie Championship Course at Hazlehead gives golfers in Aberdeen the chance to experience a public course connected to that same remarkable design legacy.

Looking ahead to 100 years

First opened in 1927, the course will celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2027. This milestone offers a chance to recognise the course’s history, its place in Aberdeen’s sporting landscape, and its continuing role as one of the city’s most accessible championship golf experiences.
