Getting started with First Steps

29.3.22

At Sport Aberdeen – as part of our partnership with Paths for All – we collectively share the vision that everyday walking can lead to a happier and healthier Scotland.

And now that spring is here, what better time to get involved?

As part of our Walk Aberdeen programme, our First Steps sessions are aimed at older adults who are looking to take the ‘first step’ to becoming more active or would like to improve their confidence walking outdoors.

The sessions last for 45 minutes and have been designed to help improve participants’ strength and balance. The sessions comprise of two elements:

1. Chair-Based Exercises

To start, participants will do 20 to 25 minutes of simple exercises to improve their strength and begin to move their leg muscles. Many of these exercises can be done seated, but some can be done standing with a chair for support if necessary.

2. Short Gentle Walk

Afterwards, participants will go for a short gentle walk for 15 to 20 minutes. This will be at a social pace and will follow a flat, paved course.

These sessions cost £3 to attend and take place as follows:

Tuesday – 13:00 to 13:45 – Get active @ Kincorth

Thursday – 11:00 to 11:45 – Get active @ Jesmond

Thursday – 13:00 to 13:45 – Get active @ Westburn

If you fancy attending, then pop along to give First Steps a try for yourself. If you’d like further information or have any questions, contact our Health Walks Coordinator at bharrison@sportaberdeen.co.uk or 01224 047928.
